In 2015, Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads and certain community leaders recognized the need for a sole purpose organization to support our dynamic and fastest growing new businesses. Through appointment, a task force was assembled to bridge a gap that exists between our community’s available resources and start-up business owners. Some of these gaps include the distinct needs of finding flexible and low cost facilities during periods of rapid growth, professional resources during times of critical decisions, and administrative support. The task force was named the Market Center of Ideas and originally created to vet best suited facilities based options that would serve the Lee’s Summit entrepreneurial community. Through the study of various business startup business support models and the assessment of our business community’s strengths, it was determined that a co-working facility should be developed. Considering a significant taxpayer expense would be incurred through a public-private financed facility , Market Center of Ideas pivoted in its mission to develop itself as a best in breed programming facilitator, mentor and professional advisor resources provider, and potential funding source for entrepreneurs. These strategies support the single goal of driving entrepreneurship in Lee’s Summit. In 2017, Market Center of Ideas changed its name to Velocity Lee’s Summit to better reflect our momentum based support of start-ups. Today, in abidance with the City of Lee’s Summit’s Economic Development Vision Statement, Velocity is an independent nonprofit that continues to partner with and receive support from the City of Lee’s Summit.
